Simple DNSCrypt does not really have any documentation.

To get it to work on Windows, this is what I did:

Main Menu
enable all under configuration (assuming you have IPv6)
enable DNSCrypt Service – This is required! It's the on/off switch.
Network Cards
show hidden cards
click on Local Area Connection (or whatever yours is called) and wait for it to be green instead of grey
click on VirtualBox Host-Only Network and wait for it to be green instead of grey
leave Loopback Pseudo-Interface 1 disabled
Resolvers
enable Automatic Mode
Advanced Settings
enable DNS Cache
disable Block IPv6 (assuming you have IPv6)
disable Force TCP
disable Global Resolver (I think)
Apply Settings after all of these.

I have not yet experimented with DNSCrypt Proxy's DoH (DNS over HTTPS).

VirtualBox compatibility

VirtualBox may be kind of fussy.

If it does not have network connectivity, try disabling and re-enabling VirtualBox Host-Only Network and applying settings. If that does not work, try restarting the appliance. If that doesn't work, try restarting VirtualBox.

Self-update

If you have not disabled "Check for updates on startup" (see the gear icon at the top of the app), then when you launch the app, it checks for new versions, and if one is found, it will not let you do anything until you install the update. So if you want to just see or change your current config, you are out of luck until you update.

The update also resets your settings (at least, that is what happened in 2018 when it fetched the dnscrypt-proxy 2.0.8 update). So you have to redo the steps above.
